The Brotherhood of St. Andrew started in Chicago in 1883 as a prayer and Bible study group of young men, led by a layman. The group has grown and spread throughout Episcopal churches world-wide. Today, the ministries of the Brotherhood are a blend of Christian work carried out locally, through the efforts of individual chapters, and in foreign countries, directed by the Brotherhood's National Office, in cooperation with Anglican bishops in dioceses around the world.
A group of men at St. Mark's gathered together and started a new chapter in 2009 that meets weekly on Saturday mornings for breakfast, fellowship, Bible study and planning how to "give back" services to the Louisville community. The group follows guides provided by the Brotherhood's National Office (<--click to see link).
Across the country Brothers Andrew maintain apartments for low-income families, sponsor and work with Boy Scout troops, visit teenagers and men serving in prisons. Some chapters organize visits to the elderly and shut-ins, help in programs to feed the hungry, run prayer groups, etc.
The Brotherhood simply asks its members to commit to a lifetime of prayer, study and service. Members must be baptized Christian males at least 12 years of age and be willing to complete a study guide. Sign-up sheets to join St. Mark's group are available in the church's lobby, contact: Edgar Eaves or just join us at 8 a.m. on Saturday mornings in the back corner of Langley Hall.
