"Hospitality" is the word we like to use to describe our evangelism program. We desire to be a place of gracious hospitality. INVITING: The first item to which a good host or hostess must give attention is that of inviting. We sometimes call this stage of our evangelism program "invitationalism." To be an inviting people and an inviting place is a multifaceted task. We work hard at creating an inviting space, inviting worship services, inviting programs. We encourage each other as individuals to invite and to be inviting. As a parish, we regularly invite the community into our lives. WELCOMING: A good host first invites, and then welcomes. St. Mark's desires to be a welcoming people. With a great deal of intentionality, we seek to ensure that those who are newcomers to St. Mark's experience our joy at their being present with us. The means of our intentionality is a hearty welcome. Both lay and clergy participate in this welcoming. This aspect of our hospitality involves our bread ministry, our coffee hour, and our greeters. INCORPORATING: As good hosts and hostess, we desire to incorporate those new to our faith community fully into parish life as quickly and with as much ease as possible. Being attentive to the needs and desires of those entering our common life, first and foremost means getting know each other. Newcomer breakfasts, the shepherding program, foyers, coffee hours, and recreational events are but a few of the ways we gather and deepen our relationships. BREAD MINISTRIES: Following a newcomer’s first visit it is our goal to have a volunteer from the church drop off a home baked loaf of bread either later that Sunday or in the days immediately following. Should the newcomer not be home the bread along with a pre-printed note of welcome can simply be left at the residence. Bread is a symbol of nourishment and likewise a symbol of hospitality. The bread is being offered to visitors as a token of St. Mark’s hospitality. If you would like to help the parish in our efforts to incorporate newcomers into the life of the parish, please contact the parish office. Ms. Gwen O'Dea directs our evangelism program.
