ST. MARK’S WEEKLY EMAIL

·        WELCOME TO THE AL-MAHDI FAMILY

Thanks to everyone for responding to our call to welcome our Palestinian refugee family to Louisville! Sabah, Rafaat, Abdulmalik and Hanan Al-Mahdi are settling into their new apartment well. They have started English classes and are learning how to use the bus system to get around town. Rafaat and Hanan are still in need of plus-size women’s coats, and Abdulmalik is hoping to find a used hybrid bicycle that he can use for transportation (a cross between a mountain bike and regular road bike.) If you have coats or a bicycle that you would like to donate, or if you would like to volunteer to visit the family or drive them to appointments, please contact parishioner Diana Church at diana@cesfoundation.com or 345-9719. We are also searching for a “rabbit ear” TV antenna for their television.

·        PSALM RETREAT AND SPECIAL GUESTS ON SATURDAY NIGHT

This Saturday at St. Mark’s we will begin our joint retreat on the Psalms as we worship with St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church and the Church of the Advent. The Rev. Ben Maas and the Rev. Tim Mitchell will con-celebrate at the Eucharist, and the Rev. Anne Vouga will preach on the lectionary psalm for the day. As usual, please join us for a wine and cheese reception after the service.

The Rev. Anne Vouga will lead sessions on the Psalms on March 7, 8, and 9 from 7:00 pm until 8:30 pm. Each evening session will include time for worship.

Sunday evening, March 7, we will meet at the Church of the Advent, 901 Baxter Avenue at Cherokee.

Monday evening, March 8, we will meet at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 2233 Woodbourne Avenue.

Tuesday evening, March 9, we will meet at St. Mark’s, 2822 Frankfort Avenue.

·        ADULT EDUCATION ON SUNDAY

Our Coffee Hour speaker this Sunday is the Rev. Anne Vouga, who will present the second class in our Lenten Series on Praying with Jesus, based on Eugene Peterson’s new book, Tell it Slant. We will finish our discussion on the Lord’s Prayer and then take a look at Jesus’ prayers of thanksgiving.

·        2010 LENTEN SERIES

Join us this week for our Wednesday Evening Lenten Series, “Discovering your Spiritual Gifts.” A light supper will begin at 5:45 pm, followed by the program. There is a $15 fee which will cover materials involved. Youth are invited to join the adults in examining their spiritual gifts, and elementary school children are invited to explore our Christian “Spirit of Adventure,” with a series of classes based on the film, “Up.” If you have not signed up but are still interested in participating, please speak with Katherine Doyle or call the Parish Office.

·        CENTERING PRAYER WORKSHOP, TAKE 2

On March 13, 2010, St. Mark’s will host an Introduction to Centering Prayer Workshop from 9:30 am to 3:00 pm.  This workshop has been rescheduled from the original February 6 date, due to snow. Sally Lambert, our workshop leader, has led numerous retreats and workshops on Centering Prayer and is on the Leadership Committee of Contemplative Outreach of Kentucky. For more information, please contact either the Rev. Anne Vouga at 502-895-2429 (avouga@gmail.com) or Sally Lambert at 502-552-5812 (shlnamaste@insightbb.com). A sign-up sheet is available in the Information Center, and all participants need to register before Monday, March 8. We ask for a $10 contribution to cover the cost of lunch, payable the day of the workshop.

·        DIOCESAN CATECHUMENATE

Interested in confirmation, reception, or reaffirmation in the Episcopal Church? St. Matthew’s is hosting a diocesan Lenten program of catechesis, led by Bishop Gulick, each Wednesday evening in Lent, beginning February 24 at 6:30 pm. For more information, contact Anne Vouga.

·        FISH FRY

Join us for a Lenten Fish Fry, hosted by the Brotherhood of St. Andrew, each Friday in Lent. Fish, fries, and coleslaw will be served from 5:00-7:00 pm in Langley Hall, with proceeds being directed to parish outreach programs. Please note that carry-out will be available as well as dining-in.

·        OPPORTUNITY TICKETS FOR THE EPISCOPAL CHURCH HOME LUNCHEON

Opportunity tickets for drawings to be held at the yearly Episcopal Church Home luncheon held at the Olmsted (April 16) are now being sold following each service. They are available at a cost of $3.00 each or 2 for $5.00. Please support this worthwhile endeavor—all proceeds benefit the scholarship fund at the Church Home.

·        EASTER FLOWER ORDER FORMS

Easter flower order forms are now available in the Information Center. Please note that the order deadline is next Sunday, March 14th.  Forms can be turned in to the Parish Office.

·        METRO MATCH AT UCHM

For every $1.00 that you give to United Crescent Hill Ministries as a donation for LG&E assistance, Councilwoman Tina Ward-Pugh will match with $1.00 from her Neighborhood Fund, and LG&E will match $2.00. Just make out your checks to UCHM, with “Utility Match” in the memo line, and Anne Vouga will collect and deliver them to UCHM.

·        HOMEWORK HELP AT CRESCENT HILL BAPTIST CHURCH

Over 40 refugee students have been coming for Homework Help at Crescent Hill Baptist, and they are greatly in need of additional teen or adult tutors. Think about joining this program for a few hours each week, on Wednesdays from 3:30-5:00 pm. For more information, please contact Anne Vouga or Mary Beth Ellis.
